Wisdom, 14 Years and Counting

By Heather Nordell

A bright spot for the human rights activist in all of us is the annual Women of Wisdom conference every February in Seattle.

Founder Kris Steinnes launched the first one in 1993 after being inspired by the book, The Feminine Face of God: The Unfolding of the Sacred in Women, written by Sherry Andersen and Patricia Hopkins. Steinnes inspiration has in turn touched thousands of attendees to the event Feb. 23 to 26 at the Magnuson Park Activity Center.

“Women need to be empowered in order to raise their voice and have an impact,” says Steinnes. “Girls grow up with a social conditioning that does not always encourage them to express themselves.”

Steinnes envisioned the first event to be a platform for the authors. However, it quickly grew into a much larger forum for women to share experiences and wisdom with one another. Since the first event, Kris has seen women change careers, go back to school and change their lives as a result of the conference.

The Women of Wisdom conference offers various speaker presentations and workshops on topics such as personal growth, spirituality, the divine feminine, leadership and empowerment. It includes some music and other arts performances.

“The community that is formed at the conference creates a safe space,” explains Steinnes. “Women who are usually quiet hear other people share and begin to feel comfortable to open up themselves.”

Rev. Judith Laxer, a long-time conference participant shares her thoughts: “Every February I meet with my tribe. It has developed a community for women so they don’t feel they are in it alone. It has transformed and empowered me to realize my spiritual path was in fact a viable career.”
