April 2008 | On Our Radar

Don’t Just Get Mad…Get Active

Spring is in the air once again, which means it’s time to bid adieu to winter’s increasingly bizarre-o storms and prepare for another long, hot summer. Back when Earth Day was founded in 1970, scientists — speculating that smog and dust particles could block the heat of the sun — debated if pollution would cause the globe to cool down. Now, even Southern Baptists (now crusading for stricter environmental protection) know that rising mean temperatures are threatening survival for a number of species, including humans. This April 22nd, get active with an Earth Day event and show the planet — and its inhabitants — some much needed love.

• The Earth Day Network is spearheading major daylong events in cities across the country. Find an event near you at earthday.net.

• The EPA lists a host of Earth Day events and offers some info on how to preserve our precious national resources.epa.gov/earthday

EarthShare.org offers up an extensive directory of volunteer opportunities and earth-saving tips.

• Round up your old mobile phones and give them to Eco-Cell.org , which will refurbish or recycle your outdated cellie.
